Scarves have been worn by women and men for thousands of years. Queen  Nefertiti was believed to wear scarves, in Antient Rome men wore them as "sweat cloths". Scarves with different designs, worn in various ways can be seen on the terracotta army soldiers. Napoleon Bonaparte gifted his wife Josephine a pashmina scarf, which laid foundation for her collection of over 400 scarves.

Cashmere shawls became the epitome of high fashion in the 19th century. The famous Paisley pattern was established that time. Queen Victoria purchased a shawl in 1842.

With the emergence of silk in the west, many clothing brands started producing silk scarves. In 1937 French fashion House Hermes started importing Chinese silk to be woven into luxurious square scarves. After the development of synthetics, rayon (viscose) this slippery fibre was a semi-synthetic material that was names "Artificial silk". During the WW2 British scarf brand Jacqmar of London continued producing scarves with imaginative propaganda themes from 1940 -1945. 

After the end of the Second World War bold and vibrant colors came on the market. Ascher commissioned designs from leading artists: Matisse, Picasso, Moore were among many others contributing to the "Artists Squares". 

Many famous actresses: Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot used to wear them. Scarves were always preferred accessories for the Queen, Elizabeth II.

Famous New York restaurant "21 Club" has been visited by many celebrities since 1930. Elizabeth Taylor, John F Kennedy, Ernest Hemingway... Each Christmas the owners would give away a customized scarf to their regular customers. The central theme was equestrian and jockeys. Then there were tartan check of Burberry, daring chains of Chanel with CC logos.
